How many words should you write in the IELTS exam?

What is the ideal length of essay is an interesting question.

While there has always been a minimum, unlike other Cambridge exam tests, there has NEVER been an upper-word limit in the IELTS exam

The instruction has always been:

Write at least250 words (for Task 2) OR Write at least150 words (for Task 1)

So, if 250 and 150 were the minimum number of words, does that make them the ideal word count, or should you be writing more?

Will you improve your band score with more words?

And, if you do write more, how much more?

Do more words mean a higher score?

Number of words?

What’s the answer?.

Well, on the one hand, you need to write essays that address the task fully in Task Response.

This means you need to extend your ideas.

On the other hand, you need to have “error-free sentences” to get a chance of scoring 7 or above for Grammatical Response and Accuracy.

Unfortunately, more sentences usually means more errors!

When I guide students I offer this advice.

For an Task 2 Essay

In order to write an essay, that extends sufficiently for Task Response 280 to 300 words is probably enough, anymore and you might be off topic, repeating your ideas or including irrelevant details.

For a General Task or Task 1

In order to write a General Task letter or Task 1 report, a maximum of 200 words should be enough to avoid repetition or avoid including irrelevant details.

Writing to these guidelines also allows sufficient time to check your writing for errors if you write at an average speed.

However, stronger students, native speakers or students at C1 or C2 level, could probably write more than this and still have good control of grammar, vocabulary and ideas.

The rule still applies, the more you write, the more mistakes you will probably make, which is why it is often a good idea to limit the length of your response. Long responses can often become repetitive or go off-topic, which affects your band score negatively.

I’ve always told my IELTS students that, in IELTS writing, every word counts and should only add value to your Essay.

This will only add to your band score.
